Every year, the nation gets glued to their TV sets, waiting with bated breath; to see Indian Idol crown their favorite star. In 2010, Indian Idol Season 5 began with a bang on 26th April 2010. This time hosted by Hussain Kunjerwala and first Indian Idol, Abhijeet Sawant. Judged by music composers Anu Malik, Salim Merchant and singer Sunidhi Chauhan, Season 5 was a huge success.
High Stakes and Big Prizes
This time the stakes were high and the competition was fierce. The winner was to be awarded an opportunity to work at the forthcoming Yashraj movie. The broadcasting of Indian Idol Season 5 began in April and the winner was announced in August.
After rigorous elimination during the audition, the selected participants were scrutinized at three Theatre Rounds following which they competed against each other in the Piano Round. The 16 candidates performed individually in the Piano Round out of which 3 were eliminated subject to voting by the public to reach the Gala Round. After elimination of 3 contestants in the first week, the remaining 13 were eliminated on weekly basis based on public-voting.
The Winner of Indian Idol 5
Sreeram Chandra from Secunderabad, Hyderabad bagged the coveted title of Winner at Indian Idol Season 5. The multi-talented Sreeram loves to play football, basketball and guitar. He is also credited to perform various music shows. After singing for a Telugu film, ‘Ashta Chemma’, Sreeram’s claim-to-fame was his song ‘Tum Mille’. He was also awarded the Lata Mangeshkar Award by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It was his golden-voice who won the hearts of all at Indian Season 5.
Runner-Up of Indian Idol 5
After having to quit Indian Idol Season 3 and 4, Bhoomi Trivedi from Baroda, Gujarat came second in Indian Idol Season 5. In Season 3 she had to quit because of jaundice and in Season 4 she quit as her aunt passed-away. Belonging to a family where music is worshipped, it was her good-looks coupled with an exceptional voice that made Bhoomi stand out of the crowd. She started singing when she was in 8th and since then has participated in a host of singing competitions.
Second Runner-Up of Indian Idol 5
Rakesh Maini from Agra came third in Indian Idol Season 5. He participated in the competition as it was his parent’s wishes to see their son on TV. Rakesh’ brilliance lied in the fact that despite lack of professional training, he sung with great confidence and diligent effort.
The other participants in the top 13 were: Swaroop Khan,Shivam Pathak, Tia Kar, Naushad Ali Kawa, Shashi Suman, Arpita Khan, Yashraj Kapil, Manisha Karmakar, Meghna Kumar and Vishwas Rai.
Indian Idol 5 Controversies
Indian Idol Season 5 courted a host of controversies. First it was Anu Malik complaining that his co-judge, Sunidhi Chauhan was getting a greater footage than him. Then it was the news of link-ups between fellow participants. Judges fought too among each other over performances of contestants.
