India’s most sought-after singing competition, Indian Idol, began with its fourth season in September, 2008. Hosted by actor, Hussain Kuwarjerwala and singer, Meiyang Chang, the season witnessed participation from amateur singers from across the nation.
The season was judged by music-composer, Anu Malik and renowned lyricist, Javed Akhtar. Sonali Bendre and Kailash Kher had replaced previous season’s judges Alisha Chinai and Udit Narayan. The registration for the competition began on 1st April, 2008. The season began to be aired on 18th September, 2008 and concluded on 1st March, 2009.
Indian Idol’s popularity is manifest from the number of participants who come for auditions. After registering telephonically, the participants arrived for auditions held in various cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, etc.) in the first 3 weeks of May, 2008. The selected 100, who qualified the auditions, were asked to participate in the subsequent round held in Mumbai. From the selected 100, 30 were chosen to participate in the following Piano Round. From 30, 14 were chosen based on voting by the public.
The Talented Final 14
The 14 singers who managed to get selected got eliminated gradually with 1 participant leaving the show every week. The selected 14 were:
- Sourabhee Debbarma : The winner of Indian Idol season 4, Sourabhee Debbarma became the first female participants to clench the coveted title. Sourabhee hails from Agartala, Tripura. She learned to sing from her cousin who practiced classical singing. She loves to dance too. Sourabhee’s dream of owning a musical album came true with the release of her debut album ‘Meherbaan’.
- Kapil Thapa: From the hilly areas of Dehradun originated the golden voice of Kapil Thapa. Inspired by the voice of singer, Shaan, Kapil was part of the Indian Army. He is also credited to win several awards for singing in his Army Band.
- Torsha Sarkar: The third finalist, Torsha Sarkar was born and brought-up in West Bengal. A B.Sc. graduate, Torsha was known for her shy and reticent behaviour. She credits her stint at singing to Shreya Ghoshal who inspired her into professional training. To her credit, she sang the song ‘Salam Karne ki Aarzoo Hai’ from the blockbuster, Umrao Jaan.
The other participants in the top 14 of Season 4 were: Rajdeep Chaterjee, Remo Ghosh, Dushyant Sahu, Prasenjit Kosambi, Bhanu Pratap, Mohit Lalwani, Kuldeep Singh, Priyanka Negi, Shini Kalvint, Tulika Ganguly and Ananya Mishra.
A Power Packed Season
The fourth season of Indian Idol was replete with power-packed performances. The competition witnessed participation from all corners of the nation, only to be concluded with Sourabhee from Agartala bagging the prestigious title.
