The third season of Indian idol started on 4 May 2007 and ends on 23 September 2007. It was aired on Sony entertainment television (SET). Judges of this season were singer Udit Narayan, lyricist Javed Akhter, pop singer Alisha Chinai and music director Anu Malik. Hussain Kuwajerwala and Mini Mathur hosted this season.
After the roller coaster ride, at the end Prashant Tamang came out as a winner. Prashant Tamang and Amit Paul were the finalists of this season. Prashant tamang won this show by getting 10 times more votes than Amit Paul. Auditions for this show started on February 16 at Jodhpur & Bhubaneshwar and concluded on April 7 at Dubai, UAE.

Wild card entries of this shows were Padmanav Bordoloi, Shantanu Sudame, Bhavin Dhanak, Suhit Gosain, and Aisha Sayed. Ankita Mishra, Amit Paul were evicted during the show and came back to the show as wild card entries. Out which Amit Paul went till end and comes runner up of the season.
Grand finale of this show on Sunday, September 23, 2007 marks the appearance of various celebrity guests i.e. Sukhwinder Singh, Sandeep Acharya, Abhijeet Sawant, Mika Singh, John Abraham. Prashant Tamang who won season 3 is a Darjeeling-based actor and Nepali singer. He was the first Indian police force member to reach the final of Indian Idol. He was a constable in Kolkata police force.
Popularity after the Show
Prashant Tamang, the winner of the season came up with his maiden album Dhanyawaad after the show and went to to tour across the world participating in several concerts. Afterwards he started acting career and acted in several Nepali movies.
Amit Paul, the first runner up of the season later appeared in several Indian TV shows such as Ek se Bhadkar Ek, K for Kishore and he also gave several performances in various concerts.
There were various controversies during this show. Alisha Chinai was very upset on the elimination of Meiyang Chang and left the stage at that time. Another one was a radio jockey of red FM who commented that shopkeepers now need to take care of their security on their own as gorkhas are now on singing while he was referring Prashant Tamang who is also a gorkha, because of this there were massive protests from Gorkhas in Darjeeling district. After the intervention of Information and Broadcasting Ministry red FM issued an apology clarification.
